Here we are again, looking back on all of Alexander’s successes in the last year. This year though, we are strong enough to look ahead to some of the new opportunities that Alexander will have in the coming year.
This fall, Alexander will start preschool. It’s unbelievable that this little boy will be going to school four days a week. We have been reading stories about preschool and how he will “meet new faces, hear new names, see new places, watch new games.” We know that he might miss us – but he knows that when the day is through, we will “come right back to you!” Okay – who are we kidding – he won’t miss us at all but we will be a wreck; with our faces pressed against the window praying that it all goes well!
Last year, our goal was for Alexander to walk across the finish line all by himself. This year our goal is to just keep up with him. He has gone from weebling and wobbling to racing and chasing.
Last year, Alexander was using his signs to tell us about what he needs. This year Alexander has started to say our favorite words (“Ma” and “Da”). He is quite the conversationalist and we can’t wait until we can understand everything he’s telling us.
Last year, we were surrounded by over 80 of our friends and family for the Step Up for Down Syndrome walk. This year, we’d like to grow that number to 100. Last year, we raised over $8,200, and were the second highest fundraising team. Our prize was a $500 scholarship to Adam’s Camp. As many of you have heard, Alexander’s week at Adam’s Camp was one of the most amazing experiences of our life. He learned to use a spoon, he made his first friend, and we realized that it was going to be okay. This year, we’d like to set a fundraising goal of $9,000.
We ask you to join us again this year for a day of fun and family at the Step Up for Down Syndrome Walk benefiting the Mile High Down Syndrome Association (MHDSA). The walk begins at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, September 25th in beautiful Denver City Park. A pancake breakfast will be served for registered walkers at 7:00 a.m. Pancakes go fast, so get your cakes early or join us in our team tent for bagels and coffee. You may register for the walk by clicking on the button at the top of the page. If you are unable to join us in Denver, you may register as Virtual Walker or donate to our team online.
Each year we learn and grow through this journey and we continue to be so humbled by your love and support. We still have a long way to go, but we can start to see the path ahead and we know that we will not travel it alone. We know that you are all walking through this too, step by step, moment by moment, through victories and heartbreak – and we are so blessed.
Sincerely,
Alex and Jennifer
